GOLF
AT GREAT HARBOUR CAY
PGA Grand Opening At
Great Harbour Cay, 1969
Upon completion of the Great Harbour Cay course in
1969, Joe Lee believed it to be one of his finest courses
and the rave reviews poured in from far and wide. Gardner
Dickinson Jr., one of Ben Hogan's proteges was the original
Director of Golf at Great Harbour Cay. He was ably
assisted by John Philp, a member of the club-making family
from St. Andrews in Scotland.
Great Harbour Cay Golf Club had arrived and the golf
world knew it! A list of the Pro-Am guests for the Grand
Opening in 1969 read like a Who's Who of business, golf,
media and entertainment. Ben Wright, golf writer for the
Sunday Times of London flew in with the top European golf
writers who like everyone else, became enchanted with Great
Harbour Cay. PGA Tour players Jack Nicklaus, Lee Trevino,
Tony Jacklin, Bob Murphy, and dozens more enjoyed the timeless
challenge of playing seaside golf on a beautiful tropical
island.
Pristine Resorts is currently discussing plans with several
resort golf management and ownership groups to turn the clock
back and return the golf course to its former prominence.
The golf club and all golf operations will be part of the
future 104 room Beach Resort and Golf Club.
